SISMA Water Technology Sdn Bhd, through joint venture company GSL Water Sdn Bhd, was awarded the tender for the privatization of two water treatment facilities at Gunung Semanggol and Taiping in 1989 by the Perak State Government. GSL, formerly known as Innovest-Lyonnasie Sdn Bhd, had operated these plants on a 25-year concession since 1989.
GSL, the first privatised water concessionaire in Malaysia, produced 110 MLD of drinking water for Lembaga Air Perak which in turn distributed to about 300,000 consumers in the districts of Kerian and Larut Matang, covering the principal towns of Taiping, Kamunting and Bagan Serai.
